What is reflexology?

footchartReflexology is a non invasive holistic treatment that is generally carried out on the feet, but in some instances may be performed on the hands or ears. It works on the principle that we have channels of energy flowing through our body’s that can become blocked, when for example, we become stressed, injured, or have an ailment of some kind. These blockages can make it difficult for the body to activate it’s natural healing system and this is where reflexology can help. Reflexology is based on the theory that there are specific points on the feet that mirror and correspond with the whole body, including it’s organs and systems. Pressure is exerted on these points or reflexes, as they are also known, and along with massage, and the inducement of relaxation, the body begins to regain it’s inner balance.

Benefits of reflexology

Reflexology treats the body as a whole and although cannot claim to cure may relieve symptoms of many conditions. It may also benefit the following:

  • Promotes the feeling of wellbeing
  • Eases stress related conditions and tension
  • Aids relaxation
  • Boosts circulation
  • Can revitalise and boost your energy
  • Assists in the elimination of toxins
  • Encourages a healthy immune system
  • May help to ease symptoms of pregnancy
  • May aid the induction of labour

What to expect

A consultation will precede the treatment to ensure suitability of treatment. Only removal of footwear and socks is necessary.  Feet will be soaked and dried. You will then be made comfortable on the treatment couch and covered with towels or a blanket, and soothing music will be played in the background. The feet will then be worked on one at a time and I would like to stress that this treatment does not tickle the feet. The treatment begins and ends with a relaxing foot massage.
